AMERICANS ABROAD (10/29)

The letter "Europeans think we're nuts" was unfair. From an overseas perspective Trump looks like an idiot, that is true, but then a lot of Americans would agree with that. More significantly we do not value education in the same way as many other countries do. Our idea of education is pragmatic, "Will it get me a job?" not "Will it make me an educated person?" Being knowledgeable about the world, knowing one's history and understanding current events are not priorities for Americans who work far harder than their counterparts in other industrialized countries for far less. We have no system of universal health care, fewer social programs, less unemployment benefit. Our military industrial complex, however, exceeds in size that of all industrialized countries put together. Only 36% of Americans are passport holders so the average American has very little idea what "abroad" looks like. 32% of American can't read. So I think "nuts" is the wrong word. Naive, poorly educated, self-destructive, over worked but friendly and open are perhaps better way to describe Americans. God forbid we should ever be mistaken for Canadians!
