Though I wasn't born here, I love Arizona. The topography is one of the most ancient on the planet. When I drive to Flagstaff I know I am at the bottom of an ancient sea. When I drive past Payson to Show Low and see those vast forests of ponderosa pines rippling like a green sea to the horizon, I get goose bumps. Looking out over the Canyon from the North Rim is profoundly religious and brings tears to my eyes. We are all blessed to live in Arizona. It may be hot in the summer in Phoenix but it's a dry heat and it's our heat and we survive it stoically like Minnesotans do their snow. Our politics are a mixed bag. We don't like extremes. We like moderation, seeing the other person's point of view. We like politicians who care about people, who serve the community whatever their political affiliations. We like people who are comfortable with themselves. We love our saguaros whose general attitude is to put their arms up in the air and give life to a bunch of other insects, birds and animals. I like to think of us as multi-cultural. Most of us are from somewhere else so the mix feels good. We have our blind spots but calling ourselves Arizonan feels like a good feeling.
