Yesterday's decision by the Supreme Court to permit gerrymandering will put an end to democracy in our lifetime. Already the Republican Party has used the new information technology to rig the boundaries of electoral districts in its own favor and one can assume the democrats will now do the same where they can. Fairness just got thrown out of the window. By subverting the democratic process and refusing to endorse Obama's selection of a perfectly well qualified Supreme Court justice, Mitch McConnell has won and his legacy will mean minority government for at least the next fifty years. We should mourn the passing of a vibrant democracy in which the will of the people has now been tied up lock stock and barrel. The election of a minority president was just the first step. Change, however, is coming. The demographics will demand it but the battle will be slow and long. McConnell who loves the shadows, controls the levers of power quietly and masterfully. His is the real Republican legacy and the mass of people and the press just don't see it or want to see it.
