To publish an editorial one day on the what the writer believes to be the overinflated reaction to the coronavirus and then publish a reader's letter agreeing with the premise, verges, to my mind, on the incestuous. Shouldn't the aim of publishing readers' opinions be to publish alternate viewpoints, so instead of confirming an editor's opinion, however nice that is for the editor, different viewpoints are explored?
Perhaps mistakenly, I believed this was the purpose of publishing readers' letters. I hope both editor and letter writer are right assuming this is an overreaction to the pandemic. Looking at the present European situation I fear it may not be. Seven aircraft carriers attacking Hawaii successfully got us into a war with Japan. The coronavirus is already among us and killing people. A man going into battle without fear, doesn't last long.
