MEDICARE FOR ALL (2/08)

Hardly a week goes by when opinion writers don't inform us that medicare for all will bankrupt the nation. There is never any explanation of why we pay more for medical care than people in Canada, Japan, UK or other industrialized nations. Citizens in these countries pay as much in taxes as we do. And how come we can happily spend over $700 billion on the military industrial complex and this does not bankrupt us but increasing government expenditure on health from $63 billion to perhaps $85 billion might break the bank? Why do newspapers never publish articles about health costs in other industrialized nations? Not counting deductibles I pay $466 a month for Medicare, private insurance (Plan G) and a prescription plan which slightly reduces the price of my drugs. This sum covers hospital and doctor visits. What does a retired worker in Canada or Japan or Singapore or the UK have to pay for medical care? Having lived and worked in all these countries I believe it's considerably less. Are these issues too complex to understand or explain? Or are there too many lobbyists and vested interests making sure the American public doesn't find out it's being taken for a ride?
