When you read the eulogies and relive the life of John Lewis on the TV, doesn't it make you feel great to be an American? He risked his life for the justice he believed in, he stood firm to the ideals of non-violence, to the rights of every person to live freely, to have respect and to be equal in the face of the law. I wept watching and listening to him because if anyone epitomizes that golden city on the hill to which Americans aspire, he is that person. He has been the guardian of our conscience, a deeply human, deeply passionate, wonderfully articulate voice who lived and died for everything we hold dear.
