THE SIREN SONG (12/04)

Odysseus had himself tied to the mast of his ship and told his followers to fill their ears with wax so as not to hear the sirens' call. Trump is the modern equivalent of the sirens with his populist call attempting to lure his followers and us onto the rocky shore. It's the siren call of Populism, defined as "a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups." With the aid of Fox and right wing media Trump has perfected the song. It still echoes out, luring us onto the twin rocks of the pandemic and social chaos. Forget reality. Forget the truth. Forget that we are sealing our own fates and some are bewitched. Even though he obviously lost the election, the call still comes every day in twitter choruses. "The election was stolen. You were cheated." And his followers believe it. Republican leaders in Arizona echo the call despite all the evidence that this was a free and fair election. The rest of us have to fill our ears with wax and row as hard as we can away from the island, away from the populist siren call to try to get us all back to civilization.
