VACCINATION (12/04)

Every parent makes choices about vaccination. When our baby daughter was due for her first shot, we hesitated. There was ongoing debate in the press about safety. Close neighbors had a severely disabled son needing 24 hour care, an event which devastated their lives. His problems became noticeable about the time of him being vaccinated so they thought there might be a connection to the whooping cough vaccine. When we consulted with our doctor, he told us that it was our choice. Children didn't die from whooping cough so we took the risk of not including that vaccine. No parent needs to go through the experience of watching their child suffer from whooping cough. My daughter coughed her lungs out every few hours for almost two weeks. I barely slept, holding her with her head on my shoulder as she coughed up a thin clear liquid which dripped down my back. I was devastated that there could be anything so malignant as to attack this innocent baby She survived and thankfully has no memory of the event but I can still hear the cough, feel the heaving of her ribcage on my chest and the fluid dripping down my back. If your doctor advises a vaccine, my advice would be don't hesitate.
