I first learned about "white flight" in Louisville. Whites alarmed by the newly independent blacks fled to new suburbs, abandoning the city center which, devoid of economic stimulus, fell into slow decline and a ghetto mentality. This has been the pattern of many older cities across America where as city centers declined, new suburbs sprang up to accommodate the wealthier middle classes. It's hardly surprising that the older cities, where many have to struggle to earn a basic wage are breeding grounds for rioting. So the argument that Democratic mayors are to blame for the unrest is a fallacy. Poverty, exclusion, racial prejudice and injustice, poor schools, police brutality are the real causes. The richer white communities living in their walled, comfortable estates have inoculated themselves against any responsibilities for urban decay or decline with its ensuing social problems. I noticed Republican election ads warning voters of the dangers of the "mob" outside Mayo clinic where hardly a brown face disturbed the blue Arizona skies. Someone must be to blame for our problems, either the poor or socialist mayors spurring on the mob to take away white people's hard earned cash.
