The rise of antisemitism described by Avi Mayer must be fought and condemned wherever it raises its ugly head. Hatred breeds hatred. The fear, however, is that this hatred and the history of antisemitism in Europe is used by the State of Israel as a cover for its treatment of Palestinians. Just as all Jewish people deserve justice under the law and freedom from discrimination so the Palestinians deserve the same rights. Israel's occupation of the West Bank is illegal but the government continues to permit the building of Jewish settlements there. Palestinian property owners are besieged and intimidated in East Jerusalem. The Jewish dream of a Greater Judea is pursued at the expense of Palestinians who have lived there as long as the Jews have. Jews have the right of return to Israel but Palestinians refugees, chased out of their homes by war, do not. Gaza is little more than a prison camp where resentments and lack of opportunity break out every ten years in open and futile aggression. Palestinian/Israeli hatred continue to fester. If we want peace in the Holy Land Israel must pursue the conditions for peace and reconciliation as ardently as it defends itself.
