ARIZONA'S WATER (2/24)

Arizona, the arid place, fed by a major river, the Colorado, the red river.... it used to be red, now it's more of a green color because we have constructed dams, used the water to make electricity which has made the state and our ability to thrive. We depend on the headwaters in the Rockies to supply the water. No snow melt in the Rockies and there's no Colorado. Every time we turn on a tap we must remember this. But the planet's climate is changing. We are growing hotter because the more carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere from our cars and our industries, the more the atmosphere warms up. It's melting the glaciers and the ice caps. The carbon dioxide is like a blanket around the earth. The process is reversible but because we are part of a global system we have to depend on the globe agreeing that there is a problem. Arizona is well situated. We have the knowledge, understanding and the science not to make make the same mistakes as the early peoples of Arizona, who a thousand years ago constructed the canals, and communities. The question is do we have the will and the leadership. We have to decide before climate change decides for us. We do not have a lot of time.
