Joanna Allhands' analysis of the declining water levels of Lakes Powell and Mead and the consequences for Arizona makes for depressing news. But the news is far from new. We have been warned over and over again over the past ten years but as young Greta said so eloquently yesterday at the Youth4Climate conference in Milan, "Blah, blah blah." We still pump out the groundwater for the sake of quick profits. We use water as if we had enough for the next hundred years. We pay less than $10 a month per household on average for water which is absurd. We make noises about conservation but do little. We should be investing in the future, in desalination plants, in water conservation projects and recycling, in educating our children about what a critical resource water is and will be in the future. If global warming continues at its present rate every gallon of fresh water will be a luxury. We will time our showers. Personal swimming pools will be for the super rich. We have all become accustomed to wasting water and we will pay the price. We need to wake up our politicians. We need people to wake up to the fact that drought is going to worsen and affect all aspects of our society.
