Americans declare with pride that we are a country of laws. Our politicians quote the Constitution like a mantra. But the trial of Donald Trump in the Senate, pretending to be one of justice did the opposite. There was no case to prove. The evidence, graphic and detailed, would have put most of us behind bars for life in a true court of law. So why did we have to endure the farce? We are told that it's the system. Each senator makes a decision to convict or not on an understanding of the facts and the charges in the impeachment. That did not happen. Most judges would have sent the defense packing after about an hour. There has to be a super majority of 67. But are are senators the jury or the judge? Only 57 were willing to convict. 43 were not convinced so the whole event descended into a political sham. It's not as if the votes cast by senators represent anything democratic or reflect the opinions of constituents. If you add up the populations of each state, the senators who voted not to convict represent 125 million Americans. Those who voted to convict represent 202 million. Woops? That doesn't sound very democratic. Why can't the trial be before the Supreme Court?
