LEADING FROM BEHIND (12/26)

As insurrections go, Jan. 6th was neither Tiananmen Square nor the Storming of the Bastille. The Ex-President stood well back, listening to advice on his phone, monitoring the progress of his followers on the front line after encouraging them. He waited for what he thought might be his moment. Had Mike Pence been hung or Pelosi or any politician killed, God forbid! The National Guard would have been sent in immediately to rescue the bodies and the other members of Congress. The certification would have been over. Trump would have been nowhere near the scene of the crime and would have disclaimed all responsibility. According to him, the rioters just wouldn't have been able to help themselves and it was all the Democrats' fault. Had he been a man who took personal responsibility or had convictions, he might have run down Pennsylvania Avenue, seized Old Glory and like Liberty on the Barricades, led his faithful followers in the front line, willing to risk everything in the thick of battle where there was danger and death, and bear spray and horror. But he didn't. He watched on TV and waited and then threw a gigantic tantrum. Doubtless the bone spurs on his heels were hurting.
