The US embraces change and experimentation. The possibility of change is written in the Constitution. Our ex-President was an experiment in populism. We found out the consequences. We believe in the power of individuals to bring about change whether it's designing a new electric car or going to Mars. We believe in the power of the ballot box to effect change. This is the great inheritance of being an American. If we make mistakes we recognize them, repair the damage and move on, sometimes too slowly as with slavery. Countries ruled by autocrats stifle dissent, spend their time consolidating power, frightening anyone who is a threat but autocrats die and their systems based on personal allegiance collapse vis Genghis Khan and Stalin. America is the country of the hopeful, of people looking forward, willing to face danger, willing to change. We didn't think twice about spending money to become the arsenal of democracy in WW2. We didn't go broke. In the Great Depression we picked ourselves up and used our talents and energy to make a better country. We argue at times bitterly, and that is only right. Who would want to be part of a family that never argued? Happy Thanksgiving.
