I confess I did not watch the interview with Oprah, principally because I am not interested. I do admit, however, it's not easy being a "royal" minor or otherwise in the UK with all those salivating journalists beating at your door, searching for stories which feed the public taste for scandalous goings on. Nothing much has changed since that great cartoonist Gillray took pokes at the shenanigans and politics of Queen Elizabeth's.... great, great, great (maybe another few greats in there) grandfather George the whatever... the one who could only speak German. Apparently Meghan, by falling madly in love with Prince Harry and all that that entails, failed to do her homework into British royalty and her husband's youthful escapades dressing up as a Nazi and smoking pot. Even minor reading into the dysfunctional goings on in her father-in-law's relationship with her late mother-in-law might have given her an inkling into the horrors of royal family life. Perhaps she didn't watch The Crown. The English have a much more wicked sense of humor than Americans. That Meghan wished to end her life because of some inappropriate comments about her child but had resisted the temptation is extremely sad but the British reaction is far more likely to be, "You want to kill yourself? That's fine. But please do not make a mess on our best carpet."
Greg Moore's defense of Meghan is understandable but implying that the Royal family is a hot bed of racism is not. I was personally delighted by the marriage and thought it brought a wonderful and colorful dynamic into the House of Windsor. That Meghan and Harry didn't have the intellectual and emotional reserves to stand up to nonsense, stick to their guns and stand strong in the face of bigotry and make sure their children, whatever shade of color their skin, stood tall as rightful members of the British royalty is a big disappointment. Queen Elizabeth has survived twelve US Presidents. Meghan Windsor may be just a little out of her depth.
