People are beginning to accept that a global climate crisis is about to unfold. The evidence is becoming incontrovertible even to those with no understanding of the science or of how our planet works. There's no point getting hysterical. The fires, the tornadoes, the hotter summers, warmer winters, floods, parched land are problems we can't ignore. What do we do? We humans, with our ingenuity and inventiveness created this situation over the last three hundred years. The process can be stabilized and reversed. Failure to do so will mean the failure of our civilization. As Americans with the biggest carbon footprint of any other nation per head of population, it is our duty and obligation to lead the way. We know the solutions. We must start moving quickly. Water conservation, energy efficient transport, rejecting consumption as a way of life, monitoring all aspects of our biosphere and protecting it intelligently must be central to our thinking. We might not survive an asteroid hit but we can cope with controlling the warming of the planet if we act together. The benchmark will be how much we slow the melting icecaps and glaciers. For our children's sake. Let's do it.
