Far be it for me to question the academic, Jonathon Turley, but isn't it a stretch to compare Elizabeth Warren to The Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II? Back in 1780 there was no internet where every Tom, Dick, and Harry could post whatever nonsense came into his head. Less than 10% of the population could read in 1780. Warren is calling for some sort of restraints on the flood of misinformation that spews out of the internet. Turley ignores the power of cable TV news and its effect on a population where 36 million people can't read. When our present election disputes, the worst pandemic in history, insane conspiracy theories, ignorance about climate change and even how our democracy works, are being exploited by people simply by lying, isn't it time we passed some laws preventing such lies from destroying our society? At the very least shouldn't we attempt to restrain this flow of sewage invading our homes. We're trying to recover from a President who lied constantly and from politicians using lies to exploit the naivety of people for their own gain. The law is our defense but if there are no laws to defend us against those lies, shouldn't we be writing some?
