Barely a week goes by without The Republic publishing an editorial or a letter raising the specter of the horrors of communism, or socialism. It's a steady drumbeat and I assume a threat genuinely felt by many. It adds fuel to those attacking the voting system. Undecided voters, wavering in their choice between Democrat or Republican are more likely to be swayed to move to the right because they feel the country is under attack from unseen, dangerous political forces. America is no longer the single economic powerhouse of the world. Many Americans feel marginalized bv a system where millionaires double in number and fame and wealth seem so close but so far. The American dream for many feels out of reach. Ironically Biden, the new President, is governing from the center but his ability to make changes with only slim majorities in Congress, limit his power to act. The powerlessness of government adds fuel to the idea that somehow our political system doesn't work and what we need is a powerful figure at the center, driving us toward success. The parallels with Germany in the 20's and 30's are scary. Let us pray the center holds, that democracy can survive and good people triumph.
