Almost daily in the US, murder and mayhem are loosed onto the population. Men, women and children, black, brown and white are gunned down. It is virtually indiscriminate and because of the lethality of the guns, one person can kill many in a small space of time. Every year the numbers increase and the American public shrugs its shoulders and moves on after each major killing. Every year more and more guns are sold to almost anyone who wants one - efficient guns which are good at killing or wounding the maximum number of people. Those who support the right to own guns remind us that it's not the guns who kill but the people who use them. Another argument is that having more citizens armed means better protection. So... the numbers of dead keep going up. Sadly, we have become used to it and are shielded from the sight of corpses because photos of a dead ten year-old in a pool of her own blood would be upsetting. America is responsible for more gun related deaths than any other country in the world for the simple reason that they own more guns. The logic is furiously obvious when you consider that in countries which restrict the purchase and availability of firearms, there are fewer deaths from guns. The evidence is there but for many Americans, guns mean freedom and if people die or children are orphaned, that is the price they are willing to pay. Unfortunately, the right to carry guns is also the right to ignore the consequences and nobody dares take a stand.
