My initial reaction to Phil Boas's editorial about the "Left's" reaction to the shambles of the Elon Musk Twitter purchase was anger. Who are the "Left" trying to silence, the "Right"? If I want to stop hate speech on public media, am I a pinko, Marxist loving revolutionary "censoring conservative voices"? If I think the ex-President is a narcissistic immoral man who instigated an attack on our democracy, does that make me a socialist? Using "left" and "right" as absolute terms is meaningless and destroys any intelligent, discussion of politics. I believe in a free market economy which has rules in order to create a level playing field so that all can compete. Does that make me "left" or "right"? Isn't that what government is about - getting a fair deal, giving equal opportunity to all? To use "left" and "right" as political goal posts to excoriate one or the other is divisive and simplistic. My second reaction was, let's forgo using broad labels categorizing people and values and politics. Words matter. Let's be sensitive about how they are used and understood. Being "left" or "right" is meaningless. Being compassionate matters more. Being truthful is everything.
