Once upon a time Arizona was a red state. Its newspaper was called The Republican. Progress and urbanization grew and gradually Arizona changed. Democrats played important parts in the State's development. There was some collegiality. Corrupt politicians were ousted. The newspaper became The Arizona Republic more in keeping with the politics but old habits and ways of thinking die hard in the rural areas and right wing extremism has found easy soil to grow its fascism. The newspaper holds its nose and turns away whenever it can. It used to publish letters from readers and editorials with every edition. Now it's down to less than 20%. The boiling political pot is not to be stirred or heated up. Quietly simmered was the editorial policy. Perhaps the divisions which nearly brought about the fall of Congress can be ignored. Let National newspapers fight over that. Now, we have right wing Republican politicians in power whose politics forty years ago would have been unrecognizable. They lie so much that they believe their lies. The newspaper nods quietly hoping the problem will go away. It won't. When do we act? When the body count gets too great? By that time it will be too late.
