Old Newspapers (12/09)

Newspapers often brag about their desire to publish the truth but who wants to hear about the horrors of the past: the lynching and burning of blacks in the South, the US Cavalry mutilating native women, The Tiger Force cutting ears off in Vietnam or Hamas' horrors against women is southern Israel? Who wants to learn about that over their morning coffee? Better the newspapers keep quiet. They have to keep the advertisers happy, sell copy. And isn't it true that every country selects its own version of the past. Our colonial history of murder, and ethnic cleansing is referred to as "Manifest Destiny." Sometimes it takes centuries to square up to the truth with those who do labelled "woke" or troublemakers. Each country chooses its own events to justify its history. The winners write what is taught to the young. For example the war in Ukraine is about Russian territorial integrity. Didn't Japan attack America without provocation. Surely the US dropped atomic bombs on innocent civilians to save American soldiers, and the Communist Party delivered the Chinese from the poverty of capitalist serfdom. The truth is more nuanced and now and again levers its way through, thanks to courageous journalism and thinkers who dare confront the status quo. People initially believe what they want to believe, what they feel comfortable with. It takes time to change long held opinions. Now each of us chooses the TV or Internet channel or newspaper which delivers our version of the news, neatly sanitized, hopefully with minimum upset. The truth sometimes takes time.
