There are worrisome contradictions in the present debate over American military aid to Ukraine and Israel. In the former case we are supplying arms to a newly democratic republic which has been invaded by its larger more powerful neighbor, because Russia claims that Ukraine, once a constituent part of the USSR, still belongs to Russia even though Russia agreed to its independence. Israel is the occupying power of the semi-autonomous authority of Palestine and has established settlements for its own people in captured areas. American military aid to Israel finances its armed forces so in one situation we are supplying arms to a country trying to resist an attempted occupation by a previous ruler and in the other supplying arms so that group trying to defeat an armed uprising of people trying to resist an occupation. Who is fighting for freedom? Americans foot the bill for both. Couldn't we insist that everyone involved in either conflict just sit down and work on a process whereby everyone could get on with everyone else without there having to be a never-ending piles of corpses so that everyone goes home to their families. When are we going to grow up?
