Golf, A Silly Game (5/29)

That anyone makes a living from hitting a small white ball with a four foot club into a little hole on a patch of green lawn has always struck me as strange. Even stranger is that many people derive great pleasure from the experience and devote their declining years to doing just that. Consuming alcohol has been a necessary part of the exercise from the game's creation on windswept sodden sea shores of the East coast of Scotland. Bored unemployed men needed something to keep them occupied. It's a frustrating game which seems to account for its popularity. Hitting the ball "right" is highly satisfying... so I am told. That Pro golfer Grayson Murray excelled and committed suicide despite his success is a tragedy particularly for his family. Suicide, however, is a personal choice. The choice should be respected. It is most hurtful to those nearest and dearest whose lives are forever changed. Some argue that suicide is a selfish act though the motives can be various. Japanese officers committed suicide on masse in Raffles Hotel in Singapore when Japan's surrender came through. They had failed their Emperor. There are many ways to look at it. Compassion for all is surely in order.
