Male masculinity is an odd thing. Once American men modeled themselves on Hollywood stars like Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper and Ronald Reagan - suave, intelligent, modest, tough and handsome. They were moral men who stood up for justice, truth and fair play. Even when heroes like Humphrey Bogart played villains, they were good villains. We still have our movie heroes, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, but they have no political ambitions. Ronald Reagan became the 40th President and stood up to the USSR because he knew evil of communism when he saw it. It seems the Republican Party has now fallen in love with an old immoral serial womanizer, who cheats at golf, has been convicted of rape, is mean and unpleasant to any opposition and been charged with crimes which would frighten the hell out of most of us. He even tried unsuccessfully - thank goodness - to undermine our system of government. That he is standing again as an example of leadership and Americans continue voting for him is distressing. As I approach 80 perhaps I am just out of tune with the age. But I hope and fervently pray if he achieves power, I am not around to witness the mess.
