Every day I enjoy The Arizona Republic. At last the newspaper is developing a style whose content doesn't give one dyspepsia. Gone are any serious discussions or analyses. Gone are tedious letters from members of the public inciting partisan bickering. No more controversial editorials from conservative ideologues. No more left wing jokes from Benson. Even the controversial Andy Capp, doyen of drunkenness and pigeon fancying, has been banished. Sunday comic strips have been doubled. Now the newspaper tries its very best to avoid controversy and cheer people up, especially on Sundays the day of its biggest circulation. If a few million Arizonans hold right wing anti-immigrant opinions, love their AR-15s let them swim in a different pool. Naturally news of Kari Lake and her innumerable lawsuits, with of course the attendant obligatory photograph of her immaculate make-up, are still welcome. The few Gilbert Goons are under the paper's magnifying glass. Arpaio is being ignored. The Suns umpteenth coach is preparing for failure. All is well in Arizona. The political playing field is kept even. 21st century print journalism declining quietly into the age of the internet.
