Republican Genius (5/08)

Nowadays there are a few strange political cuckoos in Arizona's Republican nest but when it comes to feeding off the public purse Republican members are always quick off the mark. When a bill was passed allowing for the use of natural gas in vehicles to protect the environment over two decades ago, canny Republicans milked taxpayers for over $200 million dollars. The passing of bills establishing Charter Schools made the politician, Eddie Farnsworth, a cool $36 million. The latest grift is the School Voucher Scheme which is amply rewarding the already affluent to pay for their children's education thus hopefully solidifying Republican support in richer postal codes. Public comprehensive education can go to the dogs. The teachers there are some of the worst paid in the country. Resources are kept on a tight rein. The original philosophy of "comprehensive education," the idea that all our kids should start off with equal access to education, went out the window. As an added bonus, according to US press reports, it looks as if academically the system is raising standards. This is the brilliance of Republican political philosophy. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
