Something Rotten in the State of Denmark (5/04)

It never seems to stop. Two high ranking Democrats recently accused of embezzlement and taking bribes. Potential candidates revealed as cheats and molesters. Key politicians with histories of antics in changing rooms, underage sex, drunkenness in the theatre, buying puppies and not paying for them, all manner of venal and doubtful conduct. And those are the ones that get found out. Surely we need to improve our selection processes. For the state to function well we need upstanding and intelligent politicians and to encourage, men and women who are honest, decent, honorable and worthy of our support to stand for office. I don't think we're asking for saints but certainly fewer sinners. How do we do that? The Democrat/Republican label doesn't cover it since both sides appear lacking. Do we need to know more about potential candidates before they stand for office. Should there be a standard application form for political office which everyone could access online which would help us, the voters, get to know someone? In this age of the internet when anyone's past can be thoroughly researched this might be the way to ensure moderately moral politicians and get rid of the villains.
