That the youthful assassin's bullet grazed the ex-President's ear and didn't kill him should give comfort to everyone. Both Trump and Ted Cruz expressed their belief that God intervened to save his life. We should all be grateful. Martyrdom is an impossible burden. Jesus himself was reluctant to accept it. Christians believe Jesus died only to rise from the dead. He preached a dangerous political message, questioning authority and calling on men to love one another. "Sell your possessions and give to the poor" is a central Christian tenet. "Love one another as I have loved you," a message at the core of Christianity. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you" has become the Golden Rule, spanning time and cultures. At present, however, there doesn't seem to be much love in our politics. Hatred and division seem to be the main messages. Rather than suggesting God was saving Trump, a different interpretation of the near miss might be that it is a warning shot across the bows, a timely reminder about his own mortality and the need for love. Bandaging and healing the wounds of division might be more productive politically than breaking them open or causing more.
