How's Big Brother Today? (5/19)

The collection and dissemination of news has gone through incredible changes in the last hundred years. Thanks to the internet we now have news at our fingertips from almost anywhere in the world. Controlling and editing that news flow has become more and more important politically when special interests and sovereign states are involved. News can be used to pacify, placate and motivate. Because of the dramatic changes and the fracturing of social media into different groups and the attitudes of owners, groups like Facebook and Twitter can target their customers. The sophistication and refinement of social media groups and the advent of AI means targeting specific groups, understanding their preferences and political and social views. Now, well set up groups in or out of government can mold public opinion. The governments in China and Russia are good examples of how well that can be achieved through state control. Bias can be hidden, objectivity dismissed. The US reaction to Gaza tilts toward Israel. Why? Is the South African's genocide similar to what is going on in Gaza? How do we know when we are being manipulated? It makes for interesting but nervous times.
