The Israeli-Hamas Debacle (5/29)

The editorial linking the tragedies in the Middle East to liberal teaching in US universities seems one sided. To blame the heart-rending murder of two young people by an extremist on how the ME conflict is taught in America is tenuous at best and ignores the horrors of deliberate starvation and the use of sophisticated modern weaponry against the defenseless civilian populations in Gaza. The justification of the actions of the state of Israel and their attempted destruction of Hamas is being placed squarely in the context of a fight against anti-semitism. But this is about Israel's long term plan to establish power over the territory. No effort is made to look at the history or motives of the right-wing Likud party which uses the cloak of anti-semitism to cover its cruelty towards Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and to continue their land grab. Likud never had any intention of allowing the two state solution which might have given a framework for peace if guaranteed by third parties. Rabin's assassination says it all. Hamas' actions are as indefensible as are Israel's. The bloodshed will only continue until there is justice and security for both peoples.
