The Silliness of Censorship - Are the Puritans Back? (3/06)

The Puritans are back! Republicans want to defend children's minds from salaciousness and lust and waywardness in anything they read in schools. This has been tried before over many centuries and with about the same results. The selection of age appropriate material is an inexact process since children's minds and understanding do not develop at a consistent rate. Add the fact that sexual and physical maturity do not follow a timetable. Girls begin menstruation anywhere between 8 and 16. Boys start producing sperm between 9 and 14 and can go on doing so until death. As an adult parent you want your children to learn about their own sexuality consistent with their physical maturity. However, add to that mix cultural and religious mores and the fact that some parents educate their children about sex and some don't, you have a recipe for confusion. It's never been any different. Despite the mistakes, misunderstanding and ignorance, we all grow up and learn about our sexuality. Finding out should be fun. After all, it's how we all came into the world though the dangers and risks must be recognized and navigated preferably by adult-minded parents and teachers, not politicians.
