Watching 'Saving Private Ryan' Again (3/26)

The final scene of Saving Private Ryan is standard Hollywood. The opening on the Normandy beachhead, its terror, blood and gore makes you weep for the courage, determination and the sacrifice of American young men fighting the cause of democracy. Yet Captain Miller's dying words 'Earn it' threw me in a loop and made me weep. Did any of those men with President Trump's cabinet, making decisions of life and death of both soldiers and combatants and civilians around the world ever earn that right? It feels as if Americans have forgotten or never learned their history. Did the Revolutionary War mean nothing? Was WW2 a waste of blood and treasure? Do those white crosses in Arlington signify nothing. Americans, Democrat and Republican built this country, brick by brick, statute by statute, law by law and now the administration is tearing it down. Why? One man's ego? Extremism? For what? So a few people can be richer than they were? Surely we're better than that. Where has the idealism of Americans gone? Where has the belief in a better tomorrow for all Americans disappeared to?
