On a dark night,
Near the centre
Where words come from
And ideas sit happily
In their caves until called -
And the beating heart
Is secretly measured -
There I saw the Buddha
Sitting under his tree -
There Krishna flaying the air -
There Mohammed mounting his stone -
And Christ turned backwards on his cross -
Murmuring together -
Here is where all have come
Here is where all are one.
And behind them
Came the blue roundness
Of white-capped mountains
Hurtling through the space
Between the stars,
Past Socrates and Shakespeare
Marlowe and Mahler
Beethoven and Brahms -
Strings on a universal harp
Measuring the pulse
With golden hands -
Plunging past the edge of light
Out there-
Towards the whiteness of the page -
The music of the spheres
Its ancient melodies -
Pounding in my ears -
Here is where all have come
Here is where all are one.
