sounds of buffalo hooves

To AM

friendship like an elastic band
stretches across the ebb and flow of time
hovering over the unknown

debts are given and received
love burns with a quiet flame

thanks feel superfluous
but necessary
because all is changed

you gave us a window
and we stared out with open eyes
at the new world you shared with us

though sorrow might have
brought us here
sounds of buffalo hooves
rumbling in the earth
told us a different story
