To Know What Love Can Do

We think we know what love can do
And stand rightly amazed
When a great ocean washes into
The small shore of our lives.

Here in a tidal pool of life
We know too well the moments
Of sharing and the quiet intimacy of memory
Which is our connection.

Being alone is universal.
But knowing she did it his
Way and that his way was her way
And the journey shared,

Each swimming towards the horizon
Holding the other's hand
For as long as they could
Was the long moment of love.

In our infinity of nothingness
As waves lap gently on the shore.
And the minutes come and go.
This is to know what love can do.
