To M on her Birthday

You asked for verse
A line or two
To celebrate a birthday -
So here they are
Struggling across the page
A little tired
Wobbling as we do
Now age stiffens the joints
And wearies the flesh.

But beauty is an art
Like footprints on the shore
New washed,
An echo in the vault
Of Time's slow march,
And we will drink the cup
That fellowship and life provide
With gentle joy
On this your special day.
