Explain that Smile

Beyond tears
And a sense of regret, we moved
To another doorway.

We watched separately
The loss and great dismemberment of love,
Only to know in that instance
The ambiguity of all desire.
Then came the wave,
The sound from another shore
Swirling into another universe
Where the stars rotated
And matter roasted in the furnaces
And we were one at last.

Neither the primrose, not iris, nor the rose,
Nor the insect idly inspecting the shapes of leaves
Could shake this infinity of power.
Time, settling in on the bed,
Told us what mattered.
One note sounded... a C sharp .. probably...
Then came a smile. Oh
For goodness sake
Explain that smile.
