The Lamentation of Sisyphus

You think it easy, do you,
Pushing this boulder to the top
Of the hill for all eternity?
I, who imprisoned Hades
And behaved as most men do,
Am now simply struggling
With one more step
With one more push.

If only I could rest or
Sleep for a while.

Of course
I have moments of regret.
Should I have done this or not done that?
Perhaps it would all have turned out
Differently, perhaps, but the answer
Is always the same
As is the question
As are the reasons
I am here.

Failure is permanent
Until it's over
But then to have to begin again like the sun,
Rolling the stone ever upward.

Where would I be without it,
Without the stone,
Without the happiness of effort,
Without the slow climb struggling up the hill?
You think it so easy, do you?
