The World Cup (7/23)

The Soccer World Cup, the greatest competition in the world and the most sought after trophy is to be held in 2026 partly in the US and sadly it will not go well for the latter. Pochettino, the new US coach, may be paid $6 million annually but even if it were $20 million it won't make the slightest difference. You cannot buy a national soccer team. US soccer fans, however loyal, however raucously they shout U-S-A, are going to be disappointed. The country will be disappointed. Surely the USA, the richest country in the world can buy themselves the best team? And there's your answer. You can't buy a National soccer team. To put it brutally, the Messis and Peles usually come from the slums, the dusty back lanes of favelas, the poor districts where they initially learn to develop their instincts for their craft and hone their muscles for the game and become hungry for success. Sorry America. You don't have enough slums. Lots of American kids want to be soccer players. Their parents fork out fortunes to try to make them successful, enriching the leagues with fat salaries for coaches and trainers but it will end up in failure. So prepare for disappointment. The US might beat Panama next time. Perhaps. Sorry.
